CLARB/ASLA Half Day Joint Licensure Summit

Wednesday, June 21, 2023

1:00 - 6:00 P.M. EDT on Zoom

Opening Remarks (15 minutes)

ASLA CEO Torey Carter-Conneen and CLARB CEO Matt Miller will share how our organizations are “stronger together” through partnerships on licensure defense and other initiatives that support landscape architecture licensure.

Segment 1: Empowering Boards and Chapters in Licensure Defense (90 minutes)

Hear from Marta Zaniewski, Executive Director of the Alliance for Responsible Professional Licensing (ARPL) on best practices for communicating the value of licensure and licensure boards. This topic will be followed by a discussion with Cristina Vessels, from the Venable Law firm, on how we can lead reform versus reacting to reform, by implementing the Uniform Standard. Our last topic in this segment will focus on engaging in the political process. Former South Carolina representative, Greg Duckworth, FASLA, will share why it’s important to engage with legislators and what they need to know.

Segment 2: Making Proactive Change (90 minutes)

This interactive segment features a panel discussion with Board and Chapter representatives that have implemented or are working toward implementation of the Uniform Standard using very different approaches including:

  • Cleaning up regulations/statutes for clarity, uniformity, and mobility – Bryce Olberding, Idaho

  • Modernizing licensure requirements to align with national standards – Katie Wilson, Wyoming

  • Growing the profession and diversity within the profession – Jen Wagner, North Carolina

  • Proactively responding to sunset reviews, study commissions, or Executive Orders – Lea Ann Macknally, Alabama

Following the panel discussion, attendees will break out by the different approaches to develop effective messaging based on the approach.

Segment 3: Building Successful Internal and External Relationships (50 minutes)

The final segment features effective approaches for building successful internal and external relationships that are essential for success, whether you are defending licensure or seeking proactive change in your jurisdiction.

  • Julie Hildebrand, Texas Board Executive, and a Texas ASLA representative will share best practices for building strong and appropriate board/chapter relationships.

  • Kevin White, ASLA, with Florida ASLA will discuss effective approaches for establishing and maintaining relationships with policy makers.

  • Nancy Hoines, Executive Director of the Nebraska Dakotas Chapter will share how they have formed partnerships with allied professions through the South Dakota Design Profession Coalition.

  • Doug Boyer, ASLA, with Ohio ASLA, will share how to effectively communicate with state agencies on the full scope of landscape architecture practice.

Closing remarks (10 minutes)

CLARB’s president Carisa McMullen and ASLA’s president Emily O’Mahoney will wrap up the 2023 Licensure Summit with key takeaways and a call to action to develop your plan for implementing the Uniform Standard for achieving defensible, consistent, and equitable licensure requirements.
